  3. Some time has elapsed. Lear is now staying with 
  4. Goneril (as he had planned to do in Scene 1), but 
  5. Goneril is already dissatisfied with the 
  6. arrangement. She gives new instructions to her 
  7. servants. This short scene prepares us to see the 
  8. major changes of Scene 4, and to understand 
  9. GonerilÆs harshness.
  10. 2     chiding: scolding.
  11. 3     By day and night: Goneril perhaps means 
  12. ôevery hour of the day and nightö.
  13. 4     flashes: bursts out.
  14. crime: offence.
  15. 5     sets . . . odds: upsets everybody.
  16. 9     come slack: fall short.
  17. 10     answer: be responsible for.
  18. 12     weary negligence: casual disobedience.
  19. 13     IÆd . . . question: I want the subject (of 
  20. the servantsÆ behaviour) to be raised in discussion.
