- Some time has elapsed. Lear is now staying with
- Goneril (as he had planned to do in Scene 1), but
- Goneril is already dissatisfied with the
- arrangement. She gives new instructions to her
- servants. This short scene prepares us to see the
- major changes of Scene 4, and to understand
- GonerilÆs harshness.
- 2 chiding: scolding.
- 3 By day and night: Goneril perhaps means
- ôevery hour of the day and nightö.
- 4 flashes: bursts out.
- crime: offence.
- 5 sets . . . odds: upsets everybody.
- 9 come slack: fall short.
- 10 answer: be responsible for.
- 12 weary negligence: casual disobedience.
- 13 IÆd . . . question: I want the subject (of
- the servantsÆ behaviour) to be raised in discussion.
- 14 distaste: does not like.

- 18 grows of: develops from.
- 19 straight: immediately.
